Ha. The Waste Land makes a well-chosen example, in my case -- it was somewhat my original Tree of Life experience. (There are some good articles about it around at the moment, it turns 100 in December). But to the degree I used to have the patience to read reader-resistant fiction that closely, I've lost it. I love John Crowley and yet never finish him (sole exception, Engine Summer), Delaney I can take but tend to leave, and Greer I know solely as "that intriguing writing Landingtree likes, must read her some day; must I?; perhaps I will read her some day". Anyway. I look at your capacity to read things that don't put out the welcome map with admiration, but it's more the admiration I feel for climbers than people who can ride further and faster than I can -- I am not minded to see how high I get before I fall.
